About Giant Steps School

Autism is a pervasive development disorder which affects social and communication skills and, to a greater or lesser degree, motor and language skills. Giant Steps was founded to help educate children and families experiencing autism, to alleviate associated stress and to guide in the achievement of measurable results.
Giant Steps Sydney was established at the old Gladesville Hospital site, about seven kilometres from the Sydney city centre, in July 1995 by a group of dedicated parents who wanted to bring what was then world’s best practice in the treatment and education of children with autism to Australia. The school began with a program that was developed in Montreal Canada and an intake of 12 students.
Some 15 years later, Giant Steps Sydney has evolved into a leading educational centre for children with autism and their families. We offer a range of services from early intervention, a school for children 5 to 18 years of age and an adult service, GS Community College. All services are intensive combining therapy and education in a transdisciplinary service delivery model within a caring and supportive environment
Giant Steps Sydney does not charge fees in the Early Learning Program or the School Program. While the Australian and New South Wales governments provide approximately 45 per cent of Giant Steps’ operating costs and 55 per cent of the cost of some capital works, the remaining funds must be raised through corporate and individual donations and fund-raising events such as the annual Black-Tie Ball, golf days, regattas, bike rides and other innovative activities organised by parents and supporters. Giant Steps Sydney is a registered charity and donations are tax deductible (DGR 32778). All parents are involved in fundraising activities.
